The pictures above are just some of the photos taken last Friday while I was in Toronto for a trip with my IMC@SLC class. The first picture is a QR code that will take you to a website about bettering the earth. The second contains the outside wall of active surplus, a store that sells a lot of wacky and cool stuff. The third is the outside for a sandwich shop called Banh Mi Boys, where I had lunch and one of the best sandwiches of my life. The fourth is on the set of etalk, which was taken on our tour. The fifth is the side wall of Bell Media, which has a CP24 truck driving th rough the wall. The sixth is the top of a Chapters just around the corner from Bell Media. The seventh is a picture of the set of Inner Space inside Bel Media. The last picture was of a QR code on the side of building that I took while getting on the bus home.

The three takeaways from the Toronto I gained were that: advertising agencies don’t keep long term employees, they tend to move around after a few years. The second takeaway was that employees in advertising participate in many projects at at time. The last takeaway is that no two days are the same for any employee and that keeps in lively and on your toes.

At Bell Media, I learned that they have a fairly large age range for Much Music and that they use segmentation much like we are taught in MARK 101. I also

The Future of Technology

Technology has advanced so far in the last 50 years. We put a man on the moon, created a computer system that spans the world, and created unmanned weapons. At the progressive speed that technology is advancing, it could be less than ten years before we have a virtual reality simulator or robotic creations doing half of our jobs. But I believe with all this progression comes a dark future much like the life of a lit candle. It has its shining moment and then is mercilessly blown and the dark consumes everything. We may have invented amazing creations such as cars that park themselves, voice recognition software, and medical technology such as robotic prosthesis. With these inventions also comes the darker side. We have created more ways for us to destroy each other. The smart bomb, unmanned aircraft, stealth bombers, and the most deadliest and problematic: nuclear warheads are some of the many thousands of weapons that have been created by humans solely to intimidate and annihilate other humans.

To produce these creations man has increased mining causing an increase in the depletion of Earth’s natural resources. This has increased the amount of factories and the amount of gases going into the air. The future for mankind is dark. We will have become dependent on robotics and technology to live that if a global power outage occurred there would be mass hysteria and world wide panic. The economy that everyone treasures now would cease to exist. The most used computer network in the world, the internet, that everyone depends and relies on will have vanished like a candle in the wind.

Man has his shining moments like inventing the airplane and made huge advances in the medical field but man has also pitted brother against brother in two world wars,  slaughtered thousands of people in the name of a god, most of them civilians. Mankind has an appetite for destruction. He may build a vast and magnificent city, the likes the world has never known, only for it to be burned to the ground by his fellow kinsmen. Mankind is a destructive race and the progression of technology is only quickening its unstoppable demise.

Influences

Influences that contribute together to coax me to buy new things consist of past experiences, friends, family and media. When I go to buy a video game, the influences that increase my impulse to buy it are previous experiences: if I have played the prequel or played a demo for the game in the past and liked it, friends: I ask my friends for advice on which games are great or are terrible, and finally critics: If the company that gave it a good score and/or review and I know of the company, it will definitely increase the influence to buy.

Although all that influences me to buy a video game, buying a book is a whole new can of worms. The first thing to create an impulse in my head is, again, past experiences. When I start a series of books, I buy the next in the series, no matter if the book was good or not. Friends and family don’t  have as influence as an much on me when I am buying new books because my interests vary from theirs. The artwork on the cover and the title are the biggest influence for me to pick up a book but the largest influence by far, is the plot summary and teaser on the back or inside flap (hardcover). If the little teaser is interesting enough, I’ll buy the book, no matter what my friends or family think about my choice because reading is private for me, I don’t read along with friends or family.

When I do buy or go to see movies, the largest influence is friends and family. I will watch the preview with my family or friends and if they want to see it, I agree, but if I like it and they don’t, I agree with them for fear of alienation. Keeping favour with my friends and family is important to me because I don’t want to be seen as an outcast because when I watch movies, unlike with my books, I am surrounded by my peers mostly in the theater and at home I am surrounded by family. In public, people are free to judge and be judged, where to avoid isolation, I will join the majority.

Interests?

“His body collapsed, the knife firmly implanted in his midsection, his gasps for air being the only sound in the room. His bloodied hands feebly tugged on the knife, the serrated edges ripping at his soft flesh. At the sound of the door opening, his head lolled in its direction, a pair of black dress shoes filling his vision. he turned his head toward the ceiling, a gun barrel filled his vision. The trigger was pulled and the light in the man’s eyes faded like a candle in the wind when the pool of blood from his stomach reached his cheekbones.”

This is an example of my interests. I have been writing horror stories like that excerpt written above for years. I don’t write for recognition, but for pure enjoyment. I envision what I am writing about much like a little cinema playing in my head, showing all the details of every event. I started writing stories like this in grade 4 when the teacher asked us to write about being stuck in an airport. From that day on, I have written little horror and sometimes psychological scraps.

Another interest of mine is playing video games, mostly first person shooter or role playing. I play these games and sometimes inspiration for a story just hits me and I write. I also enjoy reading Stephen King novels, the Stand being my favourite, and online stories. I have found stories online based on real novels that are sometimes better than their predecessor. These stories are mostly science fiction or supernatural because I like the idea of fantasy. In that anything can and will happen. While in factual stories, you can’t use magic or save a nation from annihilation single handed, as these stories are based on the limitations and rules of the universe that everyone must abide by, be they willing or unwilling. So I choose the blue pill and escape to my illusions instead of taking the red pill and facing the pains of reality.
